The role and benefits of motor oil

Motor oil

Every engine needs oil to run properly. In fact, motor oil is an essential element for an engine. Whether synthetic, semi-synthetic or mineral, motor oil plays many roles. What are the goals and benefits?

What is motor oil for?

Engine oil plays many roles in keeping an engine running properly over time. Here are the main ones:

Lubrication

The main role of engine oil is to lubricate the engine parts, which are in constant friction. So it reduces friction, which tends to increase wear on parts.

Cooling

The energy lost through combustion and the friction between mechanical parts causes the engine temperature to rise. Partial lubrication by the engine oil helps to dissipate heat through the lubrication circuit. It is a supplement to the coolant, which can only cool certain parts of the engine.

Cleaning

Although less well known, the cleaning power of motor oil is fundamental. Microscopic deposits accumulate in the engine and remain in suspension. They may consist of dust or combustion residues. Without engine oil, the residue would clog the engine and reduce performance. The flow of engine oil continuously carries these impurities to the oil filter, where they are collected.

Corrosion Protection

Burning fuel releases corrosive acid that can damage metal parts in the engine. The additives that are added to modern motor oils slow down corrosion. Nevertheless, over time and in contact with oxygen, motor oil can oxidize and no longer play its anti-corrosive role. Therefore, engine oil must be changed regularly.

Seal

Engine oil also improves engine sealing, more specifically the sealing of pistons and cylinders. A protective layer is applied between the various parts that seals any openings.

Good to know

To ensure that engine oil can really perform all its functions, the level must be checked regularly to ensure that the oil is changed at the right time. Overused oil no longer plays a role, which is detrimental to the general condition of the engine and its components.

What are the main benefits of motor oil?

For car owners, motor oil primarily avoids expensive repairs. Without lubricant, the engine would quickly be seriously damaged. Strictly speaking, this is what a quality motor oil offers.

Provides longer engine life

By reducing friction between parts and cleaning the entire engine, engine oil prevents the engine from clogging and damage. Mechanical parts last longer and corrode less. As a result, the motor performs better and the service life is extended.

Ensures proper engine operation

An oiled engine runs better. Good lubrication is essential to prevent serious mechanical damage. In addition to engine performance, maintenance costs are also affected.

Reduces fuel consumption and CO2 emissions

If an engine oil is overused or the level is too low, the resulting friction changes the energy efficiency of the engine, which in turn increases fuel consumption. A high-quality oil also reduces polluting discharges into the atmosphere.

Choose the right engine oil for optimum efficiency

Not all motor oils are the same. It is important to choose an oil that is suitable for your vehicle and the local climatic conditions in order to enjoy all the benefits. There are three types of oil:

In addition to the type of oil, there are several parameters such as viscosity, which is expressed in two degrees marked on the oil reservoir (for example “5w30”): the quality when cold and the quality when it is hot. These qualities indicate the fluidity of the oil according to the temperature (high or low). Depending on the engine design, the oil should be more or less liquid or more or less viscous. To choose the right oil, consult your vehicle’s owner’s manual or get advice from a professional.
